Local artists brush up help for disabled sailors – www.acfsailing.org/artshow

‘Fairwinds’, a new art exhibition planned for the spring will bring together nine of the Island’s most acclaimed artists for the first time, while raising funds for physically disabled sailors.

The exhibition will be held at Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club in April with artists exhibiting up to 80 paintings, all of which will be available to buy over the weekend. There will be a ticketed auction of nine paintings on the Friday evening, each donated by the artists.

The yacht club is the home of the Andrew Cassell Foundation (ACF), a charity that offers sailors of mixed physical disabilities, mental health conditions and long term illness to take part in yacht racing and cruising at the highest level. The Foundation works to achieve the integration of disabled and able-bodied sailors.

The exhibition is the creation of John Garlick, himself a keen sailor and passionate art lover until his death in September 2021. His idea was to create a sustainable fine art exhibition celebrating the Island and Island Art while supporting local charities. His family, together with the ACF are proud to fulfil John’s legacy. Sue Garlick, his wife of 52 years said: “We hope to grow the
event each year and support more local charities.”

When you ask those who knew John, a few words are repeated over and over again: Passionate, Inspiring, Knowledgeable, Influential and an organiser. The ‘Fairwinds Fine Art Exhibition’ was something John planned during the last months of his life battling with Multiple Myeloma. Never one to sit still, he had so much more to give, say and do and was taken too soon. We are so proud of his achievements during his life and the realising of this exhibition.”

The Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club (CCYC) will welcome visitors to come and enjoy the exhibition on the Saturday from 10am – 4pm and Sunday from 10am – 3pm.
